Think Before You Shoot (A Lesson In Rebuke) | Episode 2904

A Reference for Rebuke

In today’s episode,  consider with Todd how we as Christians are to deal with controversy. Also, dive into how and when to publicly rebuke other Christians. To do this, Todd walks through a time John Newton advised a pastor friend who was going to rebuke a fellow pastor. He makes points such as how we are to consider our “opponent,” and pray for them before we make any decisions. A rebuke should be well thought through.

How God Deals With Us

Todd moves forward with Newton’s letter. Newton discusses how God tells us to deal with people gently when we have a disagreement, just as He deals with us gently. “The Lord bears with you likewise, and expects that you should show tenderness to others, from a sense of the forgiveness you need yourself.”

Weigh the Implications of the Controversy

Todd calls us to understand a couple of things here. As an example, when disagreeing with christians on secondary spiritual issues, there may be differing views. This does not necessitate they’re going to hell. Have grace, patience, and understanding when dealing with other Christians.

Final Thoughts on Rebuke

In conclusion, it is ok to rebuke publicly. However, it should not be done in a tone or with an attitude that is obnoxious. Paul and Jesus were accused of being many things. They were not accused of being jerks.
